5 CommentsWhen Bob Marley died from cancer in May 1981, it was the death of an icon. In his relatively short life he helped bring Rastafari culture and Jamaican music to a worldwide audience and for many, he’s probably one of the only Reggae artists they could even name off hand. I say that because I’m one of those people.
This new documentary, Marley, has been years in the making and for a time Martin Scorsese was attached to the project. Unfortunately he had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts, however the film eventually found a director in Kevin MacDonald.
Which, to be honest, is probably better in my mind. Kevin MacDonald is the director of Touching the Void – one of the most best documentaries I’ve ever seen. Possibly it’s fair to say that’s it more a drama that a documentary but in any case, oftentimes I’ve watched films that undoubtedly had far bigger budgets than he had, and thought “Ah, it’s no Touching the Void… 127 Hours was a prime example of that. Go watch Touching the Void instead.
I haven’t had a chance to see it yet but I’ve seen early reviews from the Berlin Film Festival where is premiered on 12th February 2012. For what I hear, Marley promises to be rich portrait of a man, both musical and spiritual.
I’ve only got one trailer so far so I thought I’d put up one of his videos as well. I’m not a big fan of Bob Marley but I’ve always loved the sentiment in this song.

Do you mean the documentary’s poor, or the trailer, or the post itself? I haven’t the doc myself so no idea if it’s any good or not.
@ Nicola. I meant the review was bad. I dont expect everyone to like Bob Marley but when you a write a review stick to the subject you are reviewing. I personally dont like opinions when i’m reading reviews. Facts will do me fine. Thats just me.
I’m confused though PAddy, this isn’t a review? Like I said, I haven’t seen the documentary. I’m just highlighting the trailer because I think it might a good film. And besides, reviews are always personal opinions…? Are you taking offence because I said I’m not a big fan of Bob Marley? Surely it’s better for a reader to know that, so that you know where the writer’s coming from?

I am a massive Marley fan and because your not i’m looking forward to your review. With opinion and examples.
Yes the reviewers opinion is part of the review but defiantly not paramount. In some cases it annoyingly takes over, especially in documentaries, where opinion is less than secondary. Unless its about the director or other parts outside of the subject matter.
I just think that there is to much Reviewers in the world and not enough Doer’s.
