feature: Killruddery Film Festival 2013

This weekend (27th – 29th September 2013) sees the return of the Killruddery Film Festival. The festival, now entering it’s 5th year, celebrates the best of silent and classic film.

Held in beautiful surrounds of Killruddery House in Bray, the festival started out life in 2007 as a series of silent film screenings. Demand meant that it quickly grew and in 2009 it became a fully fledged film festival in it’s own right. Last year they changed it into a biennial event, so it’s only held every two years but this means that they now have more time to negotiate rights and track down better prints so sounds like it’s a good move.

Now, I have to admit, I hadn’t heard of the Killruddery Film Festival till they got in touch with me recently but I’ve been checking out the info on the Killruddery House website and it really is an impressive programme. It is, of course, a little niche but it’s great to see a group, namely Killruddery Arts, putting something like this on.

If you’re a fan of classic and silent cinema I can’t imagine there are many opportunities in Ireland to see these films presented in such a way. All silent films in the festival are accompanied but live music and there’s a Film Accompaniment Masterclass with Stephen Horne, internationally acclaimed silent film pianist and resident film pianist in the BFI. So it’s really a festival for music lovers and film lovers alike.

If you need convincing about how good the programme is, then you should know the festival has been working with Kevin Brownlow since its inception in 2007. Brownlow is possibly the world’s foremost authority on silent film… indeed in 2010 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences felt it fit to give him an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement in the field of film preservation.
