movie news: Batman vs. Superman coming to cinemas in 2015
No CommentIt might not be the full Justice League movie that people were speculating about but Comic-Con saw the announcement of the next in both the Batman and Superman franchises. In one handy combined film.
As Man of Steel heads toward the $650 million mark world wide, Zack Snyder has announced that himself and David Goyer will again be teaming up for this next evolution in the DC Comics movieverse – Batman vs. Superman. Well they haven’t actually confirmed the title but let’s face it, that’s what everyone is going to call it. Christopher Nolan is also on board as producer but I assume that just means that it’ll be another “dark” film. Though hopefully not too gritty. I don’t think Snyder is suited to gritty.
On-screen we’ll be getting Henry Cavill back as Superman. He did a decent enough job in Man of Steel so no issue there, though it’ll take a little more than that to wipe The Cold Light of Day from my brain. Maybe this film will do it. Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane will also be back but I’d be curious to see how they will all fit in this clash of the titans. They were barely in Man of Steel as it was.
The big question on everybody’s lips though is of course, who will play Batman? It’s well known that Christian Bale will not be reprising the role so speculation is rife, all up in de internetz. And like, pubs and office and other places. People talk about stuff offline as well.
Synder mentioned at the Warner Bros Comic Con panel that this new Batman v Superman film will take inspiration from the 1986 Frank Miller comic The Dark Knight Returns, a comic Synder expressed admiration for before. That comic features an older Bruce Wayne, a 55 years old alcoholic donning the cape once again after a decade off the streets. So we could be looking at a older guy for this one.
Personally. I think they should give it back to Michael Keaton. He’s 61 now, it’d be perfect.
Come on guys, do it. You know you want to.
The other question is, do we really need or want a Batman vs. Superman film? Personally, I’m relatively indifferent to the whole thing. I was never much of a fan of Superman (though I did enjoy most of Man of Steel) and I mostly disliked Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy (though I did love Tim Burton’s).
That said, whether we need or want one is irrelevent. DC Comics need it and Warner Bros want it so they’re going to make it happen. With Marvel / Disney beat the combo six ways to Sunday DC / Warner need to knock it up a gear and this is franchise building is how. If they can make this work then they just might have a chance at 2016 and 2017. They can’t take the risks on the smaller characters like Marvel did with Thor and Captain America, Marvel had Iron Man in it’s back pocket, so they’re putting their best foot forward.
Or rather, feet.
Who can blame them really.
Batman vs. Superman is set to shoot next year for a Summer 2015 release (as though 2015 wasn’t busy enough already) while two other DC Comics films, Flash and that Justice League film are mooted for 2016 and 2017 respectively.
