clips & trailers: First trailer for Suicide Squad released

With Marvel staying away from San Deigo Comic Con this year, it falls to DC Comics to serve up the goods. Suicide Squad is planned to be the 3rd film in DC’s new universe franchise. One that they, no doubt, hope will rival Marvel’s dominance of the genre and box office.

I have to admit, I know very little about Suicide Squad. I don’t know if it’s superhero (or supervillain) fatigue or the fact I was always an X-Men girl myself… but I just haven’t been following news on the DC films. I think I’ve put all my hope into the idea that X-Men will eventually cross over with the rest of the Marvel team and I’ve no room to pick up another crew…

That said, I do love a big ol’ blockbuster and I enjoyed Man of Steel, plus I wasn’t a big fan of Nolan’s Batman, so I’m pretty much game for whatever DC have for us. I’m particularly intrigued by the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – slated to fit in before this. Who knows, maybe Ben Affleck was a genius choice?

But back to Suicide Squad… Another reason I’ve found it hard to follow is that seemingly everyone is in it. The film stars Jared Leto as The Joker plus Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Hernandez as El Diablo and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress. With Viola Davis in there for good measure.

Jai Courtney and Joel Kinnaman definitely put me off to begin with… but between RoboCop and Terminator: Genisys I’ve come around to a certain degree. Well, I’ve at least come around to them not being deal breakers any more. David Ayer on the other hand I’ve been on-board with from the start. Very much enjoyed End of Watch and Fury.

Which brings us finally to the trailer which… I’m actually less sure about. Seems like there’s a lot going on there. I don’t want more Spider-Man films. If you know what I mean.

Then again, DC and Warner’s really seem to be going out on a limb here and that’s something you gotta support. So I’m still willing to give it a go.

What do you think of it yourselves? Do you have space in your heart for more super folks?

Personally, I think the first half of the trailer is really bad and the second half of it is really good. I’m sitting on the fence about it. I think it will be a good way to get the mythos of the DC universe in motion, but I’m not so sure about the film itself.
