movie news: Winners of the JDIFF 2014 Dublin Film Critics Circle Awards announced
No CommentThere are some things that are hard about running a film website, but then there are some things that are a pleasure… One of those pleasures is having had the opportunity to be part of the Dublin Film Critics Circle (DFCC) awards jury at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival (JDIFF) for the last 3 years.
For weeks now myself and the rest of the festival jury, Tara Brady, DFCC President, Donald Clarke (The Irish Times), Daniel Anderson (ClickOnline), Brogen Hayes (Movies.ie), David O’Mahony (Access > Cinema), Rory Cashin (Entertainment.ie) and Paul Whitington (Irish Independent), have spent 100+ hours watching movies just so that we could shine a light on some of the great talent on display at the festival.
Now you might think that watching as many films as you can in a compressed period of time is an amazing thing. And it is. But it’s also pretty tiring. So I’m happy (and sad) to say that JDIFF is all over for 2014… and here are our final conclusions…
Best Film – The Reunion (Återträffen) by Anna Odell
Best Director – Paweł Pawlikowski – Ida
Best Actor – Jack O’Connell – Starred Up
Best Actress – Mira Barkhammar, Mira Grosin, Liv LeMoyne – We Are the Best! (Vi är bäst!)
Best Documentary – Los Wild Ones (My personal favourite!)
Best Cinematography – Daniel Landin – Under the Skin
Best Screenplay – Georg Maas – Two Lives (Zwei Leben)
Best Debut Feature – The Rocket
Best Irish Feature – Love Eternal
Best Irish Documentary – Living in a Coded Land
Special Jury Prize – Blue Ruin
Special Jury Prize – The Golden Dream (La Jaula de Oro)

Michael Dwyer Discovery Award – Donal Foreman – Out of Here
Commenting on the awards, our Tara Brady, Dublin Film Critics Circle President, said:
“It’s been another exceptional year for films at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival and it’s been an absolute privilege for everyone on the jury to see them. The Dublin Film Critics Circle is so very proud of our continuing association with the festival. We’ll be back. Try and stop us.”
That’s it for JDIFF 2014, thanks to Tara Brady for giving me the opportunity to be on the jury…
… and see you all next year!
