Earlier today the nominees for the 86th Annual Academy Awards were announced by the handsome and charming Mr. Christopher Hemsworth and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs in double quick time (just over 7 mins in case you were wondering). When the dust settled somehow Rush had no nominations, Tom Hanks was royally snubbed (though it’s a pretty fantastic field anyway) and American Hustle and Gravity BOTH came away with more nominations that the infinitely superior 12 Years a Slave
Now I can understand Gravity, that was always going pick up technical nominations ahead of 12 Years a Slave, but American Hustle? I’m not saying that David O. Russell has definitely made a deal with the devil… but. You know.
If you want the numbers, American Hustle and Gravity picked up 10 nods, 12 Years a Slave’s 9 while Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club and
For the people, Roger Deakins picks up his 11th nomination, though I suspect he’ll be leaving empty handed again while Jennifer Lawrence becomes the youngest person ever to received 3 Oscar nominations for acting. Meryl Streep also picked up her 18th nomination though since it’s only been 2 years since she won, it seems unlikely she’ll be picking up the award as well. Besides Cate Blanchett is a lock. Right?
