The reinvention of Matthew McConaughey continues.
Dallas Buyers Club tells the true life story of Ron Woodroof, rodeo cowboy and hustler who in 1985 was told he had AIDS and would be dead in 30 days. Not one to take things lying down, Ron Woodroof decided to fight. Hearing of new unapproved drugs available in Mexico, he went about setting up a “buyers club” for the new drugs. Drug peddler or compassionate saviour… you decide.
This came out in the US on 22 Nov 2013 and there’s massive Oscar buzz behind it. Not content with all-round praise he’d received for The Lincoln Lawyer, Klller Joe, The Paperboy, Mud and Magic Mike. McConaughey’s gone all out for the Oscar nom with this one, losing 50 pounds for the role and apparently putting on a career best performance. Jared Leto as well has been singled out for praise in his role as Rayon, a trans woman and also an AIDS sufferer.
So far, I’m enjoying McConaughey renaissance. Ordinarily I’m not sure Dallas Buyers Club would be my kind of thing, but with McConaughey in the lead, I’m in…
