feature: Are live events becoming less important?
No CommentA while back, when I first moved into my apartment I had a teeny 17" TV. And I saved and saved for months until I could finally afford a 40" Full HD Sony Bravia. I decided to go for an LCD rather than a Plasma or an LED TV and I got it just before Christmas so I was all happy with myself… but I soon discovered that, unless your TV provider is HD, you're really not getting the full benefit.
I had a few Blu Rays and stuff but mainly I couldn't afford a HD subscription. So… well I wouldn't say it was a waste, it was still a cool TV. But I wasn't getting the value for it.
Then came Netflix. Finally, I am seeing the benefit of having HD. I just wish I could sort it out so that I got HD for my normal TV viewing.
Looking at this infographic I was sent though (below), I was suprised to discover that far fewer people seem to be watching live TV. I would have thought that in this age of the HD LCD, Plasma and LED TV, more people would be watching those kind of premium events. Ok, perhaps not the royal wedding but particularly the likes of the Olympics. Now maybe it's just that I love the Olympics too much, but with only 5 years in the difference, I'm surprised that it lost so many viewers.
Plus, that opening ceremony was amazing. Bonkers. But amazing.
I wonder what it is. Is it that people find that they can catch up with these events on YouTube and don't bother watching them live? Or is that people just aren't interested in this type of stuff on TV any more? They follow the likes of big sporting events etc on Twitter?
You can also often watch big events, like the Wimbledon Final etc, in cinemas… do these figures show they shouldn't bother with this?
I don't know, what do you think?
