feature: Wimbledon showing in 3D in cinemas

I've been sitting around watching various developments in cinema for a while now and I've never really commented on it so I thought now was about time… also, I've been asked to write about it so it was opportune.
Anyway.
You've probably noticed around the place that many cinemas are now showing special events as well as your usual blockbusters.Movies@Dundrum and Movies@Swords, for example, regularly show live opera in their screens. There've also been gigs and once off documentaries like the Foo Fighters recent one, Foo Fighters: Back & Forth, around the place. That particular event, like the one I'm going to mention below, also came from Sony. They really seem to be trying to make good on their make.believe ethos
Obviously in these times there is a need to stay competitive and "think outside the box" as it were, but in this case has been led by the rise in digital screens in theatres. There are now over 100 digital only screens across the Republic of Ireland and this has really opened up the options for exhibitors to show niche programming and attract new and different audiences on a regular basis. I'm sure the people going along to see AndrĂ© Rieu – Live! are not the same people who'll be heading along to Transformers: Dark of the Moon!
The latest thing to hit cinemas is 3D sport and specifically 3D tennis. Now that so many major sporting event are being filmed for the new 3D TV market there's a chance for cinemas to bring in the sporty among us as well. As opposed to the sedentary popcorn eating types like myself.
From this Friday (1st July), in assocation with
SONY, cinema patrons will get to see Wimbledon on the big, BIG screen. Now I've never been a huge tennis fan but I know lots of people out there are and given how impossible and expensive it must be to get tickets to Wimbledon this can only be described as the next best thing. Undoutedly the chance to see some of the biggest names in tennis
serve an ace must tickle the fancy of more than a few of you out there!
You can see the Men's Semi-Finals and Final and also the Women's Finals in the following cinemas this weekend in the following cinemas, click on the cinemas for further details:
Movies@Dundrum
Movies@Swords
Mayo Movieworld

Have a look at the trailer below, do you think 3D sport in the cinema is a good idea? I'd be interested to know what y'all think about these new developments…
I’ve actually written about 3D tennis after going to a UPC demo http://action81.com/blog/?p=4901
I haven’t had a chance yet but I definitely want to try watching 3D sport in a cinema. There’s a big appeal to it. That said the reason I haven’t is because of convenience, much easier to get friends to agree to meet in a house or a pub to watch a game than a cinema. That’s a big barrier to overcome.
